Fansler/Whitman Collection

Abstract

Ralph L. Fansler was an alumnus of Northwestern University and a Walt Whitman enthusiast. Besides collecting Whitman material, he researched and wrote a biography of the poet. In the course of this project he became acquainted with Whitman's niece, Jessie L. Whitman. She gave him some of her signed first editions and other Whitman material.

This collection consists of the personal and professional papers of Frances Peck Grover, whose career at the Chicago Tribune (1911-1945) was spent chiefly as movie critic (the first to write under the name "Mae Tinee"). This archive includes family correspondence and photographs, correspondence and pictures of movie stars of the 1920s, and scrapbooks of newspaper columns.

Sara Emily Moore Eastman (1886-1968) was a career journalist and illustrator whose work covered a wide range of topics from fashion and theater to the polio epidemic and militant suffrage movement.
